"...fragmentary echoes of Ornette and Miles, but the predominant voices are those which haunt the ragged windy Wellington coastline." - John Fenton

Pyramid Club is excited to present Pōneke’s Devils Gate Outfit live in Paekakariki.

Devils Gate Outfit has been thrilling audiences for the past 3 years with their unique blend of jazz composition, sonic exploration, improvisation and deep grooves. The septet features a stellar lineup of some of Wellington’s most prolific and experienced improvising musicians who have cultivated a dedicated audience which has followed them into becoming the most original and adventurous jazz band in the city.

Including members of the Phoenix Foundation, Orchestra of Spheres, Six Volts, Little Blast Orchestra and Louis Baker’s band, the Devil’s Gate Outfit plays all original compositions with an emphasis on exploring sophisticated yet unorthodox forms. The group boasts a huge timbral palette, from Indonesian gamelan to synthesizers. They were finalists for Recorded Music NZ Te Kaipuoro Tautito Toa | Best Jazz Artist for their album 'Jazz From the Underground Nightclubs Of Aotearoa Volume 5’ which was recorded live at Meow.

In Paekakariki Devils Gate Outfit will play two sets with special guest DJ Hammond Head (from Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties) spinning cosmic jazz funk between sets.
