Epic Listens: Morton Feldman String Quartet No. 2

Pyramid Club is happy to announce the start of a new series, Epic Listens!!!

There are some pieces of music that fall outside of the comfortably accepted time-frames of modern listening habits. While John Cage's truely epoch spanning 639 year long 'Organ/ASLAP' is perhaps beyond our scope, here at Pyramid Club we have become interested in experiencing the full duration of 3-4-5+ hour long pieces in the company of others.

Hosted by Tristan Carter, this series (roughly once a month) will feature a variety of epically long pieces, starting within the Western composed music tradition, but not limited to cultural or stylistic boundaries. These are intended to be sessions for listening to recordings rather than live performances, but there may be some live aspects in the future.

First on our list is the piece that started this conversation and led to this series, Morton Feldman's String Quartet No. 2.

Clocking in at anywhere between 4.5 and 6 hours, Feldman's Quartet No 2 is one of his great works in an oeuvre of very great works. We will be listening to a version which is just shy of 5 hours.

Bring a pillow, some (quiet) snacks/refreshments and settle in for the ride!

Because of the long duration, doors will open at 5:45pm and those attending will need to arrive by 6pm, at which time we'll shut the doors and begin. Numbers are limited. It is essential to register with carter.tristan@gmail.com if you would like to attend.
